The Cabildo of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura could reach an agreement through which the animal crematorium of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex also accommodates livestock waste from the neighboring island. This is at least what both corporations intend, which will study this possibility after a recent visit by the Minister of Environment of Fuerteventura, Rita Hernández, who traveled to Lanzarote to learn about the operation of said crematorium.
In this visit, the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, and the councilor Carmen Steinert, as well as the Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Fabelo, and the island director of Waste, José Juan Lorenzo, were also present. Also attending were the personnel responsible for the company Cathisa Medio Ambiente S.L., concessionaire of the management and operation of the facilities.
"Lanzarote is the first island in the Archipelago to have an animal crematorium and to comply, therefore, with European regulations and principles of proximity and self-sufficiency in the treatment of livestock waste from the slaughterhouse, veterinary clinics, livestock farmers and even individuals who require the crematorium service for animals," informed the councilor Francisco Fabelo.
Thus, it is expected that once it comes into service, the crematorium will process about 600,000 kilos per year of animal waste not intended for human consumption. It should be remembered that this facility had an investment of close to 500,000 euros from the Government of the Canary Islands and is expected to be operational in September.
