The document of the new Island Planning Plan (PIO) of Lanzarote proposes the creation of two new marinas on the Island: one in Caleta de Famara and another in Costa Teguise, in addition to the expansion of those of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. The two ports are included within the complementary leisure facilities that, according to the Plan, "due to their size, represent a possibility of environmental and landscape impact that motivates their regulation from the territorial scale".
The two ports would be added to those already existing in Caleta de Sebo, Puerto Calero, Marina Rubicón and the one under construction in Arrecife. The claim for a marina in Costa Teguise is an old aspiration of the tourist area and the municipality, on which most of the political parties have expressed themselves in favor.
On the other hand, the construction of a nautical base in Famara is not a new idea either. In 2004, the City Council tried to build a dike in the town and a neighborhood platform was created against its construction. The platform considered that the dimensions of the dike were disproportionate for the needs of the users and the beach and that it was an inadequate construction for an area declared a Natural Park, which could open the door to its massification. In 2005, the General Directorate of Coasts announced that the dike would not be carried out.
"Maximum protection of the coastline"
Despite proposing two new marinas, the PIO includes as general criteria on these facilities, that the reference should always be "the maximum protection of the Canarian coastline in its natural state, therefore giving preference, in this order, to the optimal use of the currently sheltered waters and the expansion of the current facilities".
It considers that the existing ports can be reorganized "without expanding the sheltered area in any case" and that "the execution of new port facilities will be established with absolute respect for the preservation of the seabed and coastal environments, introducing in this document the territorial scope precautions".
