The "Orden del Cachorro" presented this week the regatta that will be disputed by the "Isla de la Graciosa" barquillos from Lanzarote and the "Porteño/GRUPO FLICK" from Gran Canaria, Canarian Latin Sail boat on Sunday, August 16, 2009, starting at 12 noon.

This historic confrontation dates back to the 1960s when, in 1962 in Lanzarote and 1963 in Gran Canaria, Porteño and Isla de La Graciosa challenged each other, with the conejero barquillos belonging to the Toledo family winning on both occasions.

It was in 2008, coinciding with the 45th anniversary of this "pega" when "La Orden del Cachorro", an institution that has more than 1500 members and is chaired by Marcial Morales, recovered this noble rivalry between boat and barquillos that participate in separate local competitions, but with hulls and sails of different dimensions.

Saturday the 15th will be a day dedicated to the training of both boats, with the crew of the Porteño inviting the Isla de La Graciosa for a meal at the Fernando Roque nautical base at the headquarters of the Canarian Latin Sail and the regatta on Sunday starting at 12 noon, concluding with a Canarian sancocho for the participants, sponsors and organizers of this historic regatta, with the Parranda of the "Orden del Cachorro" performing.

Néstor Doreste, secretary of the Orden del Cachorro in Gran Canaria, said that this regatta is part of the Order's philosophy of rescuing the traditions of our "Canarian identity" and that they are not lost in time. Doreste was accompanied by fellow directors Ángel Santana and Esteban Guerra, the "cachorruo" Tomas Vega and the coordinator of this regatta Lucas Segura, supported by the presence of Juan Santana, president of the Canarian Latin Sail Federation, Ramón Mendoza, director of the Training School, and the representation of the barquillos by Felipe Medina, delegate in Gran Canaria, and the secretary Rubén Santana.

The president of Porteño/GRUPO FLICK, Ángel Santana, expressed his gratitude for the firm commitment of the "Orden del Cachorro" to maintain this challenge that raises so much expectation and that they hope to finally win for the first time, now competing in the traditional area of the Canarian Latin Sail, with departure in the tunnel of La Laja and finish line outside the Muelle Deportivo, being planned that Óliver Bravo de Laguna will be the skipper of the boat again.

"Last year we had the regatta won and we "messed up" due to the strong wind near the finish line and you are left with a scratch, so we are confident to make up for it on Sunday from 12 noon."

Both Juan Santana (Vela Latina Canaria) and Felipe Medina (Barquillos) highlighted the importance of this regatta, which is surrounded by many attractions, starting with the events on Friday, August 14, with the arrival from Lanzarote of the Isla de La Graciosa barquillos.
