The Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved in the Governing Council held this Thursday, the file for the acquisition of the historic building known as Casa del Cabrerón, located on Calle Ingeniero Paz Peraza, corner of Pérez Galdós, in Arrecife.
The purchase, for an amount of 595,000 euros, "underlines the Institution's commitment to the protection and enhancement of the cultural and architectural heritage of Lanzarote and La Graciosa," said the island's president.
The Casa de los Cabrerones, a 19th-century building included in the Architectural Catalog of Arrecife, is recognized for its historical and cultural importance. This building, which has two floors and a total constructed area of 661 square meters, stands as one of the few architectural examples of its time still preserved in the island's capital.
In the words of the councilor responsible for the Heritage Area, Ascensión Toledo, "the acquisition of the Casa de los Cabrerones represents a significant step in our work to preserve the historical memory of Lanzarote. This property is a living testimony of our heritage and a symbol of the cultural identity that we want to protect and bequeath to future generations."
A property with a lot of history
This building located between the neighborhoods of El Lomo and Valterra has a rich history linked to the social and, above all, health life of Lanzarote. Built by the Cabrera family, the house was also known as Sitio Cabrerón. Among its historical uses, its function as the Hospital de Los Dolores stands out, which operated between 1887 and 1902, being the first island health reference. Later, the building played various roles, such as a point of commerce, a dance hall for traditional candle dances, and even a military quartermaster.
Its architectural value lies not only in its constructive quality, but also in its typology, being one of the few noble houses of two heights that still survive in Arrecife. These characteristics make it a unique example of the island's architectural heritage, worthy of being protected and rehabilitated.
The Casa de los Cabrerones will be the subject of future rehabilitation projects that will seek to restore its original splendor, while defining new uses that allow it to be integrated into the cultural and social life of the island.
"The acquisition of this property is part of the Cabildo's efforts to strengthen our heritage conservation policy, seeking a balance between urban development and historical protection," concluded Oswaldo Betancort.
