The Tías City Council, in its plenary session held this Tuesday, has agreed to sign an agreement with the Lanzarote demarcation of the Bar Association by which the self-construction of housing for primary social needs is promoted.

The main novelty of this agreement, unlike a previous text, is that the architects will act ex officio "which, together with the subsidies from the City Council, will mean that an interested person can have their own home following a set of characteristics in an economical way", said the mayor of the municipality, José Juan Cruz.

The plenary session was characterized by the unanimous approval of the various points. Thus, one of the most outstanding is the initiation of the file to create accessible vehicle licenses that will be used for people with reduced mobility.

The objective is to fill a gap in the municipality, which will also soon have a larger health center and a residence, so the population that will need these services will increase.

Canary Islands Awards 2006

In addition, it was decided that the candidates for the 2006 Canary Islands Awards are the boxer Palenque in the Sports category, Domingo Rodríguez ‘El Colorao' in Popular Culture and Víctor Ramírez in Literature, although the Popular Party specified that they were proposing Alberto Vázquez Figueroa.

The initial approval for a municipal ordinance for the defense of consumers and users was also agreed.

Finally, one of the most controversial issues was the approval of the change of name of the Department of Women to Equality, since it had the vote against of Citizen Alternative and the abstention of the Canarian Coalition, considering that the important thing is the service offered by this body and not its nomenclature.

Motions

The first two motions, presented by the Socialist Party and approved unanimously, were for the creation of an Immigration council with which it is intended to give an effective response to the foreign population that arrives on the Island.

In addition, it was agreed to promote aquaculture as an alternative for the fishermen of Puerto del Carmen given the success of the courses that are taught on this subject from the Southern Commonwealth.

The motion of Citizen Alternative was also unanimously agreed to end the situation of the facilities located on Marte and Júpiter streets. Thus, the mayor reported that there is a file and a dispute with the owner of the warehouses.
