Canalejas street woke up this Wednesday closed to traffic, due to the start of the recovery works of the Historic Center of Arrecife. These recovery works are part of the Beautification Plan of the center of the capital of the Island, which will be carried out in finished sections to alter the commercial activity of the area as little as possible.
"The aim is to boost the economy of the capital's center and create a more friendly and 'walkable' city, with a small pedestrianization of this nerve center of Lanzarote," said the mayor, María Isabel Déniz. The works will affect Fajardo, José Antonio and Canalejas streets, up to the limit of Coronel Benz, and the investment is expected to exceed 700,000 euros and the estimated time for completion is 6 months, if the delivery deadlines are met.
Some of the merchants in the center of Arrecife have seen how, this morning, they could not access their businesses by car, since Canalejas street was closed to traffic. Although there are opinions for all tastes, almost all the workers in this area agree that the works will mean an improvement for everyone, but that the inconveniences are enormous and they foresee some economic losses in their businesses while the works last.
