The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, inaugurated this Monday the La Asomada-Mácher Infant and Primary School (CEIP), in the municipality of Tías. The center, which began operating in September, has capacity for 225 students and has cost about 2.5 million euros.
The center currently has only 61 students, divided into two groups of infants and one of primary, with one in five students at the school being foreign. The center, designed by the architect Martín Martín, has nine classrooms, a dining room, common rooms, a multipurpose room, a gymnasium, play areas, a school garden, a sports court and garden areas.
A "five-star" center
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Rivero, the Minister of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Milagros Luis Brito, as well as the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, the director of the Education Office on the Island, Juan Cruz; and the second vice-president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Astrid Pérez, among other authorities.
The director of the school, Magdalena Cedrés, recalled the history of the schools in the municipality. The first of these was inaugurated in 1953. The mayor, for his part, stressed that 12 years ago there was overcrowding in schools and a lack of infrastructure and described the center as "five stars".
Designed and built "by people from the land"
For his part, Paulino Rivero indicated that this school "does not envy any public or private center in the most developed country in Europe" and assured that "it is difficult to find a school in any country in the world with these characteristics." He also stressed that it has been designed and built "by people from the land."
