Notice of "intermittent" strike in the cleaning and maintenance of the socio-cultural centers and soccer fields of Arrecife

Workers of the company Volconsa, which is in charge of the conservation, maintenance and cleaning of the socio-cultural centers, soccer fields and other municipal services of Arrecife, presented on Friday a notice of "intermittent" strike due to non-payment of wages.

This protest measure, approved in the workers' assembly, will begin this Friday, October 21 and will be carried out "every Friday of each month successively." This is not the first time that employees have complained that they have not been paid their salary, since, as they have pointed out on this occasion, they have been suffering delays in the payment of their payrolls since last June.

These workers have denounced that as of October 17 they have not yet received their salaries for the month of September. "For some months now, the company has been cutting costs of all kinds, such as paint, fluorescent lights, bags, bleach or floor cleaners. In addition, the irrigation system does not work in almost any soccer field, with the deterioration that this entails in the grass," they have indicated through a statement.

"Dangers" in the facilities

In this same press release, they have also pointed out that the floor of some soccer field in the capital "is sinking due to the breakage of the pipes." "The fire extinguishers in some centers are expired for some time and the nets surrounding the soccer fields are broken, with the damage that this entails to the sports clubs that lose balls, in addition to the risk that anyone can jump and do any damage to the facilities," these employees have stated.

The workers have explained the current situation of their employment and have pointed out that even a tower of a field "has the spotlights off, with the danger that this has for the users" who use that facility at night. "The walls of a soccer field are remaining in the blocks with the danger of collapse that there may be if some more time passes without being fixed," they have denounced.

The workers have explained that the company hides behind the fact that it is the Arrecife City Council that has not paid it for "seven months" and until it does so, it will not be able to pay the employees. The workers have tried to contact, as they have pointed out, with the mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, and with the deputy mayor, José Montelongo, but it has been "impossible to speak with any of them."

"We want to know if the debt is true and what measures are going to be taken against the company, since we believe that the contract is being breached," they have clarified, while apologizing to the citizens of Arrecife for the inconvenience that their strike may cause. "Let them understand that we have no other choice," they have stated.
