Nueva Canarias Lanzarote considers that the new security protocols presented by the Cabildo are "insufficient" if the reopening of Terminal 2 for inter-island flights, which is still closed today, is not addressed.
The formation recalls that since Aena decided to unify terminals 1 and 2 in order to obtain greater "efficiency", NC has demanded that the Government of Spain reverse this situation "due to the high degree of danger involved in unifying resident and non-resident passengers in a single transit building".
At the request of the Insular Assembly of Nueva Canarias Lanzarote, on June 25 the deputy in the General Courts, Pedro Quevedo, registered in Congress a series of questions addressed to the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, José Luis Ábalos, in which he asked him to clarify the criteria considered by Aena to unify Terminals 1 and 2; whether the provisions of article 161.2 of the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands on the participation of the Government of the Canary Islands in the planning of the Canary Islands airports had been followed; as well as to explain the health protocols that the Government of Spain had planned to guarantee the safety of the Canary Islands population.
People vulnerable to virus transmission
In that request, according to NC Lanzarote, emphasis was placed "on the reality suffered by thousands of residents in non-capital islands such as Lanzarote, who are forced to travel to Gran Canaria and Tenerife for health reasons". "This means that they are people vulnerable to the transmission of the virus, given that on many occasions they arrive tired and exhausted from medical treatments," the organization points out.
The nationalists believe that "it is reckless to force these people to be in contact with travelers from other latitudes of the world without knowing exactly whether the PCR tests will be carried out at origin or destination".
Therefore, NC in Lanzarote considers that, "although the protocols designed by the Cabildo of Lanzarote are relevant, it is urgent to solve as soon as possible the reopening of Terminal 2 for inter-island flights in order to ensure the safety of the island population".
