The mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, announced this Friday on Radio Lanzarote that Mercadona has already requested the license from the City Council and that its first installation on the island will be located in the industrial estate where Lidl and Ikea are currently located. "The issue is moving fast, they have already presented a very important project and I hope that we can give it the go-ahead as soon as possible so that this supermarket can be installed," Reguera said.
The mayor explained that now the City Council will have to process this request from Mercadona. After that, the construction of this infrastructure will begin, which, according to the mayor, will bring benefits to the capital city.
The investment that Mercadona will make will be around 3.5 million euros, according to Reguera. In addition, the surface area will occupy about 14,000 square meters, although the sales area, that is, the supermarket, will have 1,800 square meters.
The mayor of Arrecife has valued the future opening of a supermarket of this chain in the capital and has assured that "it is good news". "It generates competitiveness and the people of Lanzarote will no longer have to go to Fuerteventura to do their shopping, as some are doing now," he remarked.
In addition, the mayor has also opened the possibility for Mercadona to install a second supermarket in Argana Baja. "We are waiting to solve some small details that we had with respect to the land, but we believe that it will be resolved soon," he said. Decathlon will probably also be located in this place.
