León Fajardo begins a hunger strike at the airport after Aena denies him access to his job

The former representative of the Iberia ground service company committee in Lanzarote, León Fajardo, has begun an indefinite hunger strike this morning to demand that Aeropuertos Nacionales, Aena, allow him to enter his job as an administrative employee at the Guacimeta airport.

Fajardo was a union delegate in Guacimeta in 2005 for the Iberia ground service, which later became the temporary union of companies Clece Iberia. That year, the workers' strike took place at that company, and Fajardo stood out as the visible head of the union protest. He was dismissed from his job, both by Iberia and later by Clece. After several legal processes, he has two rulings in his favor, one of them final, declaring the dismissal null and void and agreeing to his reinstatement to his job. He even obtained compensation of 6,000 euros because the company sent him to Madrid for thirteen months, where Clece has no offices.

No access card

During the strike, he and other workers invaded the airport runway. For these acts, they were sentenced to six months in prison and an investigation was opened to withdraw their access card to the restricted area of the airport. The act was considered a minor offense by Aena. Minor offenses do not entail the withdrawal of the card.

The investigation, according to Fajardo, is null and void because it was not notified in a timely manner. Furthermore, the other convicted colleagues, in the same situation as Fajardo, have the Aena card and are working at the Lanzarote airport.

Not working

The company has offered him money, the affected party assures, to leave his job, which he has not attended for four years. Since February 2009, he has been receiving his salary despite not being able to perform his job. The company even requests Aena to grant him the card, but the entity has not yet responded to that request.

Fajardo assured ACN Press this morning that he is "in a bottomless pit" and says that he has no other option but to start a hunger strike. He has set himself up in the public area of the airport and is supported by the CCOO union, to which he belonged at the time of the strike in 2005.
