The Cabildo of Lanzarote is working on several projects to "reform and modernize" the facilities and equipment of the Island Slaughterhouse. In this line, the highest island institution has reported the "complete renovation of the pig and sheep-goat slaughter lines".
“Through the Canary Islands Development Funds (FDCAN) and the Cabildo's own funds”, explains Oswaldo Betancort, “we are going to inject nearly 300,000 euros in total to reform the slaughter lines of the slaughterhouse that have become obsolete over the years”.
Thus, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, has indicated that “the new machinery will satisfy the needs of the sector in terms of meat production, taking into account the best safety and health conditions.”
With the acquisition of the new machinery, consisting of a new ramp, stunner, hanging rail and peeler, the slaughterhouse facilities will be modernized and a better service and sanitary quality will be provided in the meat process to the consuming population. Likewise, reforms will also be carried out in the offices intended for this use, the renovation of the sanitary pavement, as well as the plumbing, sanitation and electricity installations, repair of humidity, PYL cladding, carpentry and paintings.
In the facilities of the Island Slaughterhouse, since 1993, the service of slaughter and subsequent distribution of supply species has been carried out, such as goat, sheep, cattle, pig and rabbit livestock. However, the regulations on food hygiene and animal welfare have been modified over time. For this reason, the Cabildo has opted to modernize the facilities and acquire new machinery adapted to current regulations.
In this sense, Oswaldo Betancort apologizes to the sector “for the inconvenience and inconveniences that the duration of the works may cause to the professionals of the sector, but the truth is that the 10-year period that obliged the administrations to modernize and adapt the island slaughterhouses ended in 2019, and it was and is our responsibility to comply with the legal parameters and not leave the livestock sector in legal limbo”, he concluded, hoping that the works will advance at a good pace and be executed in a timely manner.
Agreement with Fuerteventura
The facilities of the Lanzarote Slaughterhouse will remain closed while the works last. However, professionals in the sector will be able to use the Fuerteventura slaughterhouse thanks to the agreement between both institutions.
Thanks to this agreement, Lanzarote professionals will be able to carry out the slaughter or slaughter, as well as related operations for bovine, porcine, caprine and ovine species in the Fuerteventura Island Slaughterhouse.
