The Cabildo of Lanzarote has reported that "for the first time" all island planning tools are underway, many of them after having already passed their public consultation phase.
The Island Territorial Planning Plan (PIOT), the Special Plan of La Geria, the PRUG and the PORN of the Chinijo Archipelago, as well as that of the Natural Park of Los Volcanes, are moving forward decisively after years of paralysis. According to the Government group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote in a statement, "this impulse is a key step for the sustainable and balanced development of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with a model that prioritizes the protection of the environment, the commitment to the primary sector and the rational management of tourism growth."
“Faced with the systematic blockage of the PSOE, in just two years we have launched all the key plans to guarantee an orderly, sustainable and fair island model,” stressed the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort. “The new PIOT protects more than 60% of the island's territory, triples the land destined for the primary sector and eliminates more than 100,000 square meters of tourist land, which will become part of the protected natural space,” he said.
For his part, the Minister of Territorial Planning and Policy, Jesús Machín, highlighted the technical and administrative progress achieved in record time. “We have unblocked essential documents that had been stalled for decades. We are going to be the first island to approve a ZAR zone (Renewable Energy Acceleration Zones) together with the Government of the Canary Islands, and we already have advanced drafts of the Renewable Energy Ordinance and the Camping and Camping Ordinance,” he said.
Regarding the schedule, the PIOT continues its processing after the public exhibition, and the Special Plan of La Geria foresees its initial approval at the beginning of 2026. The PORN of the Chinijo Archipelago will be the first document approved definitively, and the PRUG of the Natural Park of Los Volcanes continues its drafting phase. The last instrument of island planning to be released for public consultation has been the draft of the Management and Use Master Plan (PRUG) of the Natural Park of the Chinijo Archipelago and its initial strategic document. Now, once it is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas, both public administrations and citizens in general have a period of two months to contribute their observations.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote has thus assured that it consolidates "a new stage in territorial planning, prioritizing transparency, citizen participation and respect for the natural and cultural values of the territory."
