The Public Works Area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote has awarded the contract for the installation of a traffic flow and capacity control system in the municipalities of Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Teguise. This action, co-financed by 85% with the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) within the framework of the Sustainable Growth Operational Program 2014-2020, represents "an important step towards the modernization of the island's road infrastructure", according to the Cabildo in a statement.
The contract, awarded to the company New Energy Concept 2020 SL for an amount of 163,781.80 euros plus IGIC, includes the supply and installation of intelligent devices that will allow knowing in real time the number of vehicles circulating on the main roads of these three municipalities.
The Councilor for Public Works, Jacobo Medina, highlighted the strategic importance of this measure. "This technology will allow us to have accurate data on the volume and flow of traffic at different key points on the island. With this, we will not only optimize the planning of future investments, but also reinforce road safety and mobility in increasingly saturated environments," Medina explained.
According to the Councilor, "the objective is clear: to know in order to decide better. Lanzarote needs tools that allow us to anticipate congestion problems and adapt mobility policies to the real needs of our citizens. Thanks to European co-financing, we are taking a firm step towards a more efficient, sustainable and connected road network."
The system, whose contract has already been signed, will be deployed in different strategic sections of the aforementioned municipalities, allowing to collect continuous and automated information on road traffic, which will facilitate the making of technical and political decisions aimed at improving island mobility.
