The new emergency facilities of the José Molina Orosa Hospital could open its doors in the middle of this month of September. This was announced by the island director of the Health area, María José Costa, who assures that "all efforts are being made to open the new facilities during this month." The expansion that has been carried out in recent months is in fact completed, and is only waiting to receive the permits and authorization from Industry, pertinent for its start-up.

In the island direction of Health they trust that these permits do not delay the opening of Urgencias. "We hope to have the permits in a couple of days," says Costa, who understands that the new facilities correspond to the project conceived in the master plan of the Lanzarote hospital, which included the forecasts of population growth. The head of the area maintains that "the new Emergency area is prepared to assume the current and future demand, it is a huge area, so large that we do not plan to open it in its entirety. For the moment we are only going to open a part of the new dependencies, which is considered sufficient".

During the summer, on the other hand, work has continued on the expansion of the José Molina Orosa Hospital, an expansion that will not culminate until 2011. Recently the works of another part of the hospital, the pathological anatomy area, have begun, and there is still the block to be undertaken where in the future the offices and offices destined for administration, accounting and the management team will be located.

Costa also points out as positive the new incorporations of professionals that will take place in the coming months in the hospital. "The trickle of professionals arriving in Lanzarote continues," says Costa, who affirms that the opening of new hospitals in the Canary Islands and in the rest of Spain has made it more difficult to hire these new professionals, doctors and nurses.

About 270 professionals from all categories will soon join José Molina Orosa. "They come to complete the staff of the hospital center", while they are also the professionals who are going to work in a renovated hospital, "which will have 305 beds, with a new traumatology plant and another of obstetrics with 5 delivery rooms, in addition to the 5 new operating rooms that will be launched and the rest of the necessary services, because it is evident that some areas have become small", says Costa. In his opinion, the growth projection by the Master Plan that began in 2000, when the first stone of this expansion was laid, "is quite well done".
