The Department of Social Welfare, Immigration and Equality of the Arrecife City Council, led by Maite Corujo, celebrated this Thursday the act of closing the annual Spanish course for foreigners with a special coexistence activity. The event took place at the Youth Center and served to commemorate the International Migrant Day, bringing together more than a hundred people of different nationalities.

The event included a wide variety of activities, such as storytelling, theatrical performances, games and a multicultural gastronomic corner, where students and their families shared their cultures and traditions. In addition, recognition diplomas were awarded to the participants of the course, highlighting their effort and commitment to learning the language.

“Learning the language is an essential bridge for social and labor integration. In a municipality like Arrecife, where more than 100 nationalities coexist, we have the responsibility to provide tools that break down language barriers and promote an enriching coexistence” emphasizes councilor Maite Corujo.

The literacy and Spanish learning service, offered free of charge, will continue in 2025. This program is aimed at the non-Spanish speaking population of the municipality, with the aim of providing them with linguistic tools and promoting values of gender equality, access to resources and knowledge of the host culture. In this year 2024, the course has received more than 230 registration requests, and currently about 100 people attend the classes.

“From the Department of Social Welfare we have worked to make this service a stable reality, because we firmly believe that inclusion begins with communication. Our commitment is to continue strengthening this key tool for the personal and social development of those who choose Arrecife as their home”, Corujo highlights.

For next year, the course will continue to be taught at the Youth Center. People interested in registering can go to the municipal Social Services offices, located on Rambla Medular s/n (behind the Red Cross).
