The Nueva Canarias candidate for mayor of Arrecife, Armando Santana, has presented a new campaign on the streets of Arrecife ahead of the elections on May 28. Santana has distributed more than 500 books of Canarian content during this weekend to all the people who were interested in the initiative.
The progressive nationalist group has insisted on the defense of Canarian culture and has promised that if it "has government responsibilities", after the commissions it will create the first council in Lanzarote based on Canarian identity. "Arrecife needs in its city council, a dynamic area that values the traditions and customs of the Canarian people and that, unfortunately, over time are being lost or are not being given the relevance they deserve," the formation stressed in a statement.
In this line, he insisted that the application of the Canarian identity concept in schools is "very important". With this campaign, Nueva Canarias has tried to take this identity "to the chinijas and chinijos" of Arrecife and promote their teaching. The main objective of this project is to create a council that works for the rescue of our traditions and customs and where citizen participation is basic in the organization and development of the events.
In this sense, Nueva Canarias recalled that it was under the management of Santa himself that the Arrecife City Council celebrated the night of Finaos instead of Halloween.
"I will always be on the side of those who have our Archipelago as a priority in their movement and their action with people," says Santana. Nueva Canarias stresses that "it is essential" that, among all of us, "we can recover our heritage, defend our gastronomy, support folk groups, promote respect for our unique spaces and give the necessary impetus to the different sports, especially Latin sailing, Canarian wrestling or traditions such as jolateros," he concluded in a statement.
