Tomás Armas Sicilia, a cultural reference of the island and worker of the Culture Department of the Tías City Council for 30 years, passed away on Wednesday night after a long illness. This Friday, February 7, the Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Haría parish.
Armas was born in Haría in 1954 and was the town crier for its San Juan festivities in 2017. Since he was very young, his interest in culture and popular traditions led him to collaborate in different activities. He was part of the Guatifay theater group from the northern municipality and La Diversión de Tías. He also participated in the Beñesmén and el Pavón de Tías folk groups.
In addition, Tomás Armas Sicilia was an active member of the SOC and CCOO unions and served as president of the Faria Neighborhood Association for a while. Similarly, he carried out several research works, such as an inventory he made of the oil and vinegar stores of Haría from 1936 to the present.
In recent years, photography also occupied part of his free time, even holding some individual exhibitions such as 'From the Valley' (2012) in El Aljibe de Haría and 'Terruño' (2015) in the Sociedad Democracia de Arrecife.
