The storm that keeps the island on orange alert this Thursday has destroyed a banana greenhouse located between Soo and El Cuchillo. The residents of the surrounding area point to the strong storm that occurred on Wednesday night in the area as the beginning of the destruction. They believe that lightning may have struck the greenhouse and caused the damage, which would have been increased this Thursday with the strong gusts of wind.
Despite the regrettable state in which the infrastructure has been left, the banana trees seem to remain in good condition.
"It is too early to assess damages"
When seeking an initial assessment of the consequences of the bad weather on the fields of Lanzarote, Valentín Elvira, president of the Association for Rural Development of Lanzarote (Aderlan), says that it is "too early to assess damages." He states that "undoubtedly" there has been destruction, "and I myself have seen some fallen walls and some damage, but we will have to wait a couple of days to make a real and well-founded assessment."
Marcial Fernández, president of the Association of Farmers and Agricultural Landowners of Lanzarote (Asapal), is more optimistic: "From what I have seen, there is not much damage and this water has been very good". He believes that it is likely that the rain "has affected La Graciosa or roads and houses", but he affirms that "for the countryside these rains are good like that."
