The October 22 coordinator, which aims to promote the national Canarian flag, is preparing different events to mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of the tricolor flag. This working group will ask the seven town councils and the Cabildo of Lanzarote to fly this flag on public buildings on October 22.
To this end, requests have already been registered in all island institutions, addressed to all political groups, without exception. The coordinator wants a majority agreement to be promoted, through the holding of Plenary Sessions, Board of Spokespersons or any other body, that allows the recognition of "a symbol born in the midst of the Franco dictatorship and that has synthesized the aspirations of freedom, democracy and progress for the Canarians", according to this platform.
The members of the coordinator are thus calling on all parties with institutional representation in Lanzarote to recognize "a symbol assumed by the majority of islanders, of enormous historical value and validity in the face of our future challenges". In addition, they have recalled that different symbols that are not considered official have been flown through institutional agreements, as is usually the case, for example, with the Rainbow flag, a symbol of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Activities
On Flag Day, that is, Wednesday, October 22, there will be a car caravan that will depart at 6:00 p.m. from the parking lots of the Charco de San Ginés. At 7:00 p.m., there will be a concentration in front of the El Reducto bus station, followed by the raising of the flag. On the 24th, at 8:00 p.m., the Historical Archive of Arrecife will host the talk "The clandestine nation: Canarian nationalism and its symbols during the 60s and 70s", by the Tenerife historian Zebenzui López.
On Saturday the 25th, starting at 9:30 p.m., the Charco de San Ginés, in the area of the Casa del Miedo, is scheduled to host a musical event to mark the 50th anniversary of the flag, in which Gabriel García (timple), Alexis Lemes (timple), Sara Bermúdez (voice), Parranda Los Gurfines (folklore), Azarug (rock) and Dr. Wanche (reggae) will participate.
Similarly, under the slogan "Take it to the street, wave your pride", the coordinator is calling on all citizens to make the national flag visible during that week, starting with the demonstration against oil that will be held on Saturday.
From the coordinator they have recalled that this is a space "outside of political parties, open to the participation of all citizens of Lanzarote who feel identified by the flag of the Canarian People and its values of freedom, equality and dignity".
