The week of tribute to Pancho Lasso has already begun. This Tuesday, the Councilor for Education and Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Francisco Cabrera, presented the events that will be held until the 25th to commemorate this artist from Lanzarote, named Favorite Son of Lanzarote in 2004.

In the presentation, Cabrera was accompanied by the Councilor for Tourist Centers, Ástrid Pérez, and outlined a program that includes conferences, educational activities for schoolchildren and exhibitions.

The most important event will take place on Thursday at 11:00 a.m., when the institutional act of tribute to Francisco Lasso Morales (Arrecife 1904, Madrid 1973) will be carried out as Favorite Son of Lanzarote. This act will take place in the CICCA Hall of Arrecife at 11:00 a.m. and, subsequently, at 12:00 p.m., the monumental-scale reproduction of the piece "Homage to Music" will be unveiled, which is about 3.45 meters high and will be located on the maritime avenue of Arrecife, in front of the Casa de Los Arroyo.

It is planned that several relatives of Pancho Lasso will attend the event, including his daughter Rosalía Lasso, as well as representatives of the Cabildo, the Government of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Culture.

Before this act, several didactic activities for schoolchildren will be carried out, which will take place between February 22 and 25 at the Castle of San José, headquarters of the MIAC. Thus, more than 300 children between 10 and 12 years old participate in the didactic activities. Students from CEIP La Garita, CEIP Arenas Internacional, CEIP Antonio Zerolo, CEIP Mercedes Medina, or CEIP Titerroy, CEIP Yaiza, or CEIP Nazarenas will be some of the students who will be able to enjoy a storytelling and other activities in memory of the sculptor from Lanzarote.

Likewise, the Councilor of the CACTS, Astrid Pérez, announced that the celebrations of this year 2011 of the International Museum Day, which has the motto "Museum and Memory", will be dedicated to the artist. They will take place on May 18.

There will also be two conferences, which will take place this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Pancho Lasso Art School, and which will be given by María José Alcántara, director of the International Museum of Contemporary Art, and by Cristóbal García del Rosario, professor of History and vice president of the Canarian Museum.

Exhibition of unpublished work

Finally, the program of events includes an exhibition dedicated to the sculptor in which you can see unpublished works from the Pancho Lasso collection of the MIAC, which have not been exhibited until now. Among these pieces are carved tables with references to the Spanish Civil War, a sculptural piece of a soldier dated between 1936 and 1937, and some sculptures that, although they have already been exhibited, have not been exhibited for many years, as is the case of "Old Woman Sitting".

The exhibition will open on Thursday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m., at the Castle of San José, headquarters of the MIAC.

Co-financing of 3 administrations

The Pancho Lasso Tribute Week has a total budget of 47,625 euros, of which 17,625 euros have been contributed by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, 18,000 euros by the Ministry of Culture, and 12,000 euros by the Government of the Canary Islands.
