The managing director of the defunct Lloret y Llinares canning and salting factory, Vicente Lloret López, donated last Friday, to the Los Mármoles community of owners, installed in the old premises of the cannery, some engines and compressors in charge of starting the industrial activity from the 1950s to 1987, when it was terminated.

The act, in which a commemorative plaque was unveiled, began with words from the president of the community, who thanked Vicente Lloret, present at the act, for the donation of the machinery that was in operation for 30 years contributing to the economic take-off of Lanzarote before the arrival of the tourism boom.

The representative of the Los Mármoles community pledged to maintain and care for the engines and compressors, "as a legacy of the important activity that took place here for many years and in memory of a Lanzarote not so far away, in which the scarce agriculture and fishing were the main source of wealth of this island".

Vicente Lloret, very excited, was surrounded by his family and workers who shared the activity for more than 20 years in this industry that came to represent 70% of the island's economy. Some friends also joined the event.

Preserving part of the island's canning history in the collective memory

On behalf of the family, María Lloret thanked those present for their support and affection, stating that for the family it was a great satisfaction to locate the engines and compressors in the place, a symbolic location, as a vestige of everything that happened in the place for so long; 30 years of illusion, effort and uninterrupted work in the island's canning sector, becoming the factory with the highest production in Lanzarote. And it is that since the first fish drying facilities were established here, in 1950, until its closure in the 80s, Lloret y Llinares contributed to start a powerful industry of which today there is practically nothing left standing.

"May this donation serve to preserve forever in the collective memory part of the canning history of the island, to recognize the work of the workers who passed through here, of their families; and, in general, not to forget our past, the recent past of Lanzarote", concluded María Llorez.
