With the reading of the proclamation by the neighbor Orlando de León, the festivities began in honor of Our Lady of Fatima and San Isidro Labrador in the town of Muñique. The event was held at 8:00 p.m. this Thursday in the hall of the Los Llanos Sociocultural Center, which was crowded with family members and neighbors.
Orlando de León began his proclamation by recalling how the town arose and how its inhabitants, mostly dedicated to agriculture, earned their living with great effort to support their families. From a very young age until today, Orlando has always been committed to the town, contributing to ensuring that young and old people integrate and become part of all those projects that have gradually been formed for the good development of the town.
A taxi driver by profession, when electricity arrived in Muñique he became an electrician, lending a hand to the neighbors when there was a breakdown in one of the houses. He was also an altar boy and was part of the presidency and board of directors of the sociocultural center for ten years. He also participated in the creation of the town's folklore group and the wrestling team, and together with his neighbors he worked side by side to build the church, where his patrons, Our Lady of Fatima and San Isidro Labrador, would be sheltered.
Orlando also related that, to finance the first festivals that were held in the town, they held festivals with the famous orchestras of the time such as Los Jarvac and Voces Nuevas, which brought together a large number of people from all over Lanzarote. Verbenas where everyone had healthy fun and where whoever arrived without a girlfriend left engaged.
The town crier also had a very special memory for all those neighbors who are no longer there and who worked to ensure that Muñique achieved its integration into society like any other town on the island, making special mention of a woman who with her work made the town of Muñique known outside the borders of Lanzarote. Orlando put the finishing touch to his proclamation by reciting a nice poem related to a neighbor of the town.
The board of directors of the sociocultural center presented the town crier with a beautiful sculpture and his wife with a bouquet of flowers. The mayor of the Teguise City Council, Oswaldo Betancort, the Councilor for Culture, Olivia Duque, and other councilors of the municipality were present at the event. Next, the town crier introduced the popular music group Acatife, of which he was a founding member, thanking them for sharing their music on such a special day for him.
