This Friday, February 21, José Borges Cabrera, director of the Amigos de Portonao group, has died at the age of 91. Arrecife and Lanzarote lose one of the men who fought the most to preserve and recover the marine identity that Arrecife always enjoyed.
We owe him and the other members of the marine band the album 'Velas y Vientos del Pasado' (Sails and Winds of the Past), a work that was recorded in 1987 on a vinyl record accompanied by an extensive and enriching book with texts and photographs of Old Arrecife.
"A great defender of marine customs and traditions and of Arrecife and the Lomo neighborhood and the Casa de Cabrerón has left," Francisco José Navarro told La Voz.
"During the many Habaneras Encounters that I presented, every year Pepe vindicated the disasters that were being committed with the Arrecife marina. We owe it to him that José María Espino had to unearth the old Portonao dock as he called it because they had left it buried and today we can see it very close to the monument La luz que nos guía (The light that guides us)," adds Navarro.
The funeral chapel will be installed in room No. 4 of the Mémora Funeral Home-Crematorium, Arrecife-San Bartolomé. The farewell will take place this Saturday the 22nd at 11:30 a.m. in the Parish of San Ginés and immediately afterwards the burial will take place in the San Román Cemetery, Arrecife.
