Fifteen university students from all over the country will spend two weeks in San Bartolomé participating in the work camp that was presented yesterday morning in the municipal plenary hall before the media. The presentation was given by the acting mayor and councilor for Youth and Sports, Candelaria Ledesma, and Juan Antonio de la Hoz, councilor for the Environment.

The councilors explained to the young people a little about the history of the aboriginal town of Ajei and the reasons why they want to include the toponym in the official name of the municipality.

Interested in the project

The participants were interested in the project and some commented after the end of the event that it will be a very interesting activity, as well as certainly transcendental for San Bartolomé. As De la Hoz told the kids, they "will be an important part of the history of the municipality", by actively participating in the preparation of the survey for the referendum scheduled for September.

Work camps today constitute a tempting offer for young people, who far from spending their free time in night outings and long hours on the beach, seek to develop a work of social projection during the holiday period. With the intention of covering this demand, the San Bartolomé City Council has launched the Work Camp "San Bartolomé de Ajey, sign of identity".

A citizen survey

In this work camp, young people from different places in the Spanish geography will help to prepare a citizen survey to know the opinion of the population regarding the toponym Ajey and its inclusion in the name of the municipality, remaining as San Bartolomé de Ajey.

The survey will be designed by the participants themselves as a result of knowledge received in theoretical classes, where they will learn about and approach the past, present and future of the town. There will also be dissemination of local regulations on environmental matters.

Sensitive points of the municipality

In addition, the landscape recovery of sensitive points of the municipality will be part of the field activities. The participants themselves will propose the most appropriate activities to follow and evaluate the results.

These work camps, which take place in different places both abroad and in the peninsula and the Canary Islands, offer young people between 18 and 30 years the possibility of living with other people of very varied origins, which is a different way of spending the holidays.

Social project

It is about a group of young people from different backgrounds voluntarily and selflessly committing to carry out a social project accompanied by complementary activities.

The circumstance of living with other people of very varied origins is one of the most important and enriching aspects of any work camp, together with the voluntary service that is provided: learning together, working and having fun as a group, learning about other cultures and ways of thinking.

Normally the work schedule is decided jointly between the project, the work camp coordinator and the volunteers. The group must also assume community tasks such as cleaning and cooking, which must be distributed in shifts among all.

In addition to these activities, the young people will attend the Ajaches Natural Park, La Geria and the Salinas del Janubio during the two weeks of their stay on the Island.

Visits

On the other hand, they will also visit the historic center of Teguise, the César Manrique Foundation, the Tanit Museum and the Emigrant Museum.

The students of the work camp will stay at the Albergue La Santa, located in the town of the same name in the municipality of Tinajo.
