The Arrecife City Council paid tribute this Tuesday to Irene Morín Paz, the oldest member of the Day Center, who was born in the capital of Lanzarote on May 27, 1921. The Councilor for Social Services, Ascensión Toledo, explained that this act was "simple, but very emotional", and took place at the center's facilities, coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons.

Toledo praised the figure of the honoree and stated that she is "a very special person." "She is part of the life of the Day Center and her smile is known by all users and by all of us who work in the Elderly area," she highlighted.

In the tribute, Irene Morín received a bouquet of flowers and a commemorative plaque from the capital's mayor, Manuel Fajardo Feo, and the first deputy mayor, José Montelongo. There was also music on this festive afternoon, which was enlivened by the El Verol band.

More than 1,400 members

The municipal representatives addressed the attendees to congratulate them and applaud the contribution of their experiences "to an increasingly individualistic society." With this activity, the City Council joined a celebration that has been taking place in different parts of the planet since December 14, 1990, when the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons.

In this Day Center there are 1,419 members and it has "a very complete program of activities ranging from gymnastics to introductory computer workshops", according to Ascensión Toledo. "Our objective is to thank them for their support and experience, improve their quality of life and show them that we need them to continue contributing their knowledge and wisdom," the councilor emphasized.
