Arrecife hosts its first homosexual wedding

With cheers of "Long live the bride and groom, long live the godmothers" ended the marriage of Toni and Seti, which is the first homosexual wedding to be held in the capital of the island. The couple went to the capital's Town Hall after six in the afternoon, accompanied by their godmothers, Silvia Acosta and Begoña de León. Almost a hundred friends and family members were waiting for them at the door to share with them such a special moment.

A round of applause was heard when the couple entered the courtyard of the Town Hall, where a tent had been set up to celebrate the wedding. The mayoress of Arrecife, María Isabel Déniz, was in charge of officiating the ceremony, and in her introductory speech she spoke to the couple about love, respect and mutual understanding. "I wish you fortune and congratulations, and that the flame of love never goes out". With these words María Isabel Déniz congratulated the newlyweds, although she also warned them that "in love no one owns the other".

"We are very happy, the idea of getting married came up suddenly, not because of the entry into force of the homosexual marriage law", Seti told La Voz after the wedding. One of the couple's friends also stated that the two have been fighting for this marriage for many years, because they have been in a relationship for more than nine years.

A champagne toast and a present consisting of the pen with which the marriage certificate was signed were the gifts that the Town Hall offered to the newlyweds. A shower of flower petals and rice awaited the spouses at the exit of the Town Hall. The couple will begin their newly-married life with a honeymoon, which will consist of a cruise through the Greek islands.
