The Sahrawi activist Aminetou Haidar, who had been on hunger strike in the Guacimeta Airport terminal for 19 days, has left the Island for El Aaiún, after accepting a proposal made by the Spanish Government, which in recent hours would have been agreed with the Kingdom of Morocco.
Haidar, who has abandoned the voluntary fast, was going to be transferred to Western Sahara aboard a medicalized aircraft. After learning of the Government's new offer, and the end of the hunger strike, a great commotion formed at the airport, with a large number of people celebrating the resolution of this conflict.
Before leaving, Aminatou Haidar had a few brief words of thanks to the people, groups and media who have supported her in her demands over the past three weeks.
Along with her, Domingo de Guzmán, the doctor who assisted her during her voluntary fast, and the Spanish diplomat Agustín Santos, sent to the island on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last weekend, were traveling.
Haidar stated that she did not know "if she is returning home or to prison", although she acknowledged that she no longer cared since she was fulfilling her purpose of returning to Western Sahara. She does so in a legal situation identical to how she landed on the Island after being expelled from Morocco, that is, without having been granted a new Moroccan passport or having been given the one that was withdrawn when she tried to enter the country. The Spanish Government Delegation in the Canary Islands will report on the situation in which Haidar will land on the African continent.
Aminetou Haidar had been in Lanzarote for more than two weeks, when she tried to enter El Aaiún in the company of a television crew, after spending a season in the United States recovering from her weak state of health. At that time, the three people were detained and expelled from the Alawite kingdom, at which time Haidar's passport was withdrawn.
