Aderlan launches an "agroecological education" project through school gardens

The Association for Rural and Fisheries Development of Lanzarote (Aderlan) has launched the 'Agroecology in School Gardens' project, an initiative that benefits 22 educational centers on the island.

According to Aderlan, 'Agroecology in School Gardens' is a project that, through the ecological school garden, creates "a small-scale model of the organization and the relationships between man and nature as a society and as an individual, allowing participating students to reflect on environmental problems (pollution, deforestation, desertification, loss of biodiversity, etc.) by teaching agricultural practices that respect nature".

We will work with the students on the recovery of biological wealth, the use of ecological and local seeds, the importance of local consumption and food sovereignty, among others, teaching that "we are not neutral in our actions and that we need to get used to thinking in the long and medium term in a generous and respectful way with the environment of which all people are also part".

It will reach more than 85 children and young people

The project has a duration of eight months, intervening in 22 educational centers, which will allow more than 850 children and young people from different municipalities of the island to benefit from this initiative.

For its execution, Aderlan has two agricultural technical engineers and two higher technicians in agroecological production. The initiative is subsidized by the State Public Employment Service, the Canary Islands Employment Service and the Island Council of Lanzarote, and also has the collaboration of the City Councils of Teguise, San Bartolomé and Haría.

Aimed at children in early childhood and primary education and young people in secondary education, the Aderlan school garden offers "a true didactic model that promotes mutual cooperation, in which you can learn and understand in practice the concepts of ecology, self-sufficiency, biodiversity, environmental respect and healthy eating, while discovering to students the rural and agricultural culture, from which society has slowly become detached, but so important for a harmonious and healthy development", highlight the association.

The following centers benefit from this initiative: CEIP Nieves Toledo, CEIP Capellanía del Yágabo, CEIP Argana Alta, CEIP La Destila, IES Las Maretas, CEIP Güime, CEIP Mª Auxiliadora, CEIP Playa Honda, CEIP Tiagua, CEIP La Caleta de Famara, CEIP Soo, CEIP Nazaret, CEIP Muñique, IES CostaTeguise, CEIP Los Valles, CEIP San Juan de Haría, CEIP La Garita, CEIP Las Mercedes, CEIP Alcalde Rafael Cedrés, IES Tías, CEIP Guiguan and CEIP Mararía.
