The body of the young Fernanda Fabiola Urzúa, 15 years old, who disappeared last week in Arona, was found around 5:00 a.m. this Thursday buried in the El Palmar area by agents of the Civil Guard, after the only detainee so far as a suspect in the disappearance of the minor led them to the burial site.
The only detainee so far, a 28-year-old Colombian and resident of El Fraile, has a history in Tenerife for an attempted sexual assault that occurred five years ago and is detained as the alleged perpetrator of the possible crimes of illegal detention, sexual assault and murder.
The alleged perpetrator of the events was arrested thanks to the collaboration of citizens, who gave clues to the agents about the presence of a car in the area, specifically a blue SUV. During the search for the young woman, clues left by the aforementioned vehicle, owned by the detainee, were found. A thorough inspection of the same allowed to find indications that triggered the first arrest this Wednesday.
This was indicated at a press conference by the Government Delegate José Segura, the lieutenant colonel chief of the Civil Guard Command in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Ricardo Arranz, and the General Chief of the area of the Armed Institute of the Canary Islands, Miguel Martínez, who specified that the minor could have been murdered a few hours after her disappearance. The young woman was last seen last Thursday, July 26, at 9:30 p.m. in El Fraile after spending the afternoon with some friends.
There are no organizations dedicated to kidnapping
The body of the minor, which was located on a farm near the El Palmar urbanization (Arona) and near the intersection with the road that connects Valle San Lorenzo and Las Galletas, will be transferred today to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the causes of death.
The discovery of the lifeless body of Fernanda Fabiola occurs one year after the disappearance in Gran Canaria of Sara Morales and almost five months after that of Yeremi Vargas, also in Gran Canaria, of whom there is no news, although investigations continue. José Segura wanted to send a message of tranquility to the population and assured that there is "no basis" to think that there is an organized structure dedicated to the kidnapping of minors. "These are specific and isolated events," Segura stressed.
Investigation
Miguel Martínez detailed the procedure followed since the disappearance of the minor was known on Thursday, July 26, when she was heading along a track from El Fraile to her house, located in the Ten-Bel urbanization.
The first searches, which began on the Virgilio track, began at 2:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27 and resulted in the discovery of a shoe belonging to the missing person, according to her relatives. Hours later and in a nearby area a belt of the young woman was found. These indications, according to Martínez, led investigators to believe that it was a forced disappearance.
The taking of statements from witnesses allowed to have knowledge on Saturday, July 28, of the possible involvement of a vehicle in the events. The steps taken by the investigators and the evidence found at the scene of the young woman's disappearance allowed to "identify and locate" the vehicle in the El Fraile neighborhood.
The next day the owner of the same was identified, the now detainee, who was subjected to surveillance and after searching the vehicle and finding various evidence, it was decided yesterday Wednesday to arrest him. The General Chief of the Canary Islands area did not want to specify the elements found in the vehicle as the summary secrecy has been decreed.
Although at first the suspect denied his participation in the events, subsequent interrogations made it possible for the detainee to confess the events and point out the place where he had buried Fernanda.
The body was in an area that had been searched at least three times, according to Martínez, who stated that the place had been traveled at least three times "but even if it had been searched 30 times it would not have been found because it was perfectly buried and covered with stones and bushes".
The Government Delegate began the informative act showing his condolences and those of the Armed Institute to the relatives of Fernanda Fabiola Urzúa, to whom he also conveyed the regret expressed by telephone by the President of the Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
