CEPA Titerroygatra 40 Years

Cepa Titerroygatra celebrates 40 years of growth and inclusion, generating lifelong learning opportunities, empowering students to act and help transform our collective future, empowering adults to achieve their life dreams and enhancing their training in Lanzarote.

“Thank you all for being part of the History of CEPA Titerroygatra”

A lot of time has passed and many things have changed in the conejera society, in education and in the adult center itself. However, the initial spirit and the matrix idea that drove its creation in 1984 remains intact: permanent education is the most useful mechanism to compensate for social inequalities, ensure the recycling of knowledge in a constantly evolving socio-cultural environment and offer a new opportunity to those who, for various reasons, left public and free school early.

Currently, the center has an insular scope and welcomes about seven hundred students per year. It offers adults the possibility of learning basic knowledge, obtaining the Graduate in ESO, studying English or basic Computing, preparing for the entrance exams to Higher Grade FP, or learning to read and write in Spanish, among other educational options such as the Aula Mentor, digital training courses and the program "That’s English". It has also become an assessment center for key competences. This growth and diversification of the educational offer would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and dedication of those who started the project and those who have continued working with dedication, taking Adult Education to all corners of the island, including La Graciosa, and opening classrooms in all municipalities, as well as in the Lanzarote Penitentiary Center and other training spaces.

As explained by its director, Concepción María Martín Espinosa, "the celebration of the 40th anniversary of CEPA Titerroygatra is a unique opportunity for the educational and social community to look back and reflect on its history, as well as to reunite with all the people who have been part of it. Throughout these forty years, the center has accompanied its adult students in the search for training and guidance for the future, providing a humanizing space where each person can learn to trust themselves, overcome blockages and fears, develop resilience and emotional intelligence, gain personal autonomy and establish relationships based on respect and mutual appreciation".

The center has disseminated Canarian content among its students, making them participate in the customs and promoting their knowledge among all. In its beginnings, a large part of the student body was made up of older people, many of them women, who had not had the opportunity to access education due to their family or work responsibilities. Now, these people come with enthusiasm and motivation. Currently, the profile of the student body has changed due to the new population of the island, where a wider sector seeks to finish secondary education and continue higher education.

"The CEPA has been a center of reference for these students, offering them a training adapted to their needs with different shifts and modalities. This support has increased their self-esteem, their skills and their opportunities for success, both in studies and in the search for employment. The youngest students highlight the closeness of the teaching staff, which provides more personalized attention than in other centers. Over these 40 years, the center has overcome many challenges, including a confinement that made it grow and improve. This growth has been possible thanks to the collaboration of all: the students, the teaching staff, the management teams, the school councils, the educational community, the education councils of the seven town councils, the institutions and the associations. All have contributed with vocation and commitment to lifelong learning, encouraging the center to adapt and improve in response to the diverse realities and educational contexts of Lanzarote", adds its director.
