Unemployment fell by 0.9% in Lanzarote during the month of August, which ended with 91 fewer people registered in search of employment. The figure has meant recovering the downward path, after the slight rebound that had been registered in July.
That month ended with 9,702 unemployed registered, increasing 0.7% compared to the previous month. Now, the number of unemployed registered on the island stands at 9,611, being the lowest figure so far this year, and also improving pre-pandemic figures.
However, the drop in August has been well below those that had been recorded until June, when monthly drops were above 2%; reaching up to 5% in February.
In addition, although on average on the island there has been a decrease in unemployment, in four municipalities it has increased. Teguise, San Bartolomé, Yaiza and Tinajo have shown a negative result, while Arrecife is the one that has registered the best data, raising the island average.
The capital, which concentrates more than half of the unemployed, ended August with 114 fewer unemployed, which represents a decrease of 2.3%. Unemployment also fell in Tías by 20 people (-1.9%) and in Haría by 4 (-1.1%).
However, Teguise added 18 unemployed (+1.7%), Yaiza 14 (+2%), Tinajo 8 (+2%) and San Bartolomé 7 (0.6%).
Data by age, education and gender
Regarding the profile of people seeking employment, women are still the majority, with 5,658 women compared to 3,954 men. The increase in unemployment in July in Lanzarote was fundamentally female, with a growth of 1.8% compared to the decrease of 1% among unemployed men; but in August the figures were similar, with a decrease of 0.9% in female unemployment and 1% in male unemployment.
By age, unemployment falls more among Lanzarote residents between 25 and 44 years old, with a decrease of 1.4%. In those under 25 years old it is at the average, while those over 45 experienced a less pronounced decrease in unemployment, of 0.7%.
Regarding the educational level, where unemployment falls the most, with 1.5%, is among people with only primary education, which represents almost 60% of the total unemployed on the island. Unemployment grows more among university students, 2.8%, although these only represent 7% of the total unemployed in Lanzarote.
