Unemployment falls in Lanzarote by more than 500 people in March

Despite the fact that the capital accounted for 40% of the total decrease, the unemployment rate fell more than twice as much in Yaiza as in Arrecife

The unemployment rate in Lanzarote has fallen in March by 5.4%, which is equivalent to 505 fewer people unemployed, according to the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (OBECAN) published this Tuesday.

After a sharp increase in unemployment in January and a rather flat month of February in job creation, March, spurred by the Easter campaign, has meant a significant decrease in unemployment figures on the island to stand at 8,834 unemployed people.

A month ago there were 9,339 and on this day a year ago there were 10,714, so the year-on-year decrease is equivalent to 17.5%.

By sex, the decrease has been greater among men, whose unemployment rate has fallen by 6.4%, while among women the decrease was 4.6%.

By age, the decrease in unemployment has been greater among the youngest, 11.4% fewer unemployed among those under 25 years. The rate of unemployed between 25 and 44 years has fallen by 7.1%, while among the unemployed over 45 years the decrease has been the smallest, registering a decrease of 3.7%.

 

The unemployment rate falls more than twice as much in Yaiza as in Arrecife

By municipalities, the largest percentage decrease occurred in Yaiza, where unemployment has fallen by 9.4% compared to February, which is equivalent to 64 fewer people unemployed. The decrease in the unemployment rate compared to March last year in the southern municipality was 24.6%, if a year ago there were 822 unemployed, today there are 620.

Next is San Bartolomé, which with a decrease of 7.5% in relation to the previous month, has reduced its number of unemployed by 78 people. Compared to a year ago, the decrease in this municipality is 18.3%. In that time, this municipality has gone from having 1,183 unemployed to 967 today.

In Tinajo the decrease has been 7.1%, which is equivalent to 25 fewer people on the unemployment lists in this municipality, which currently has 327 unemployed. Since a year ago, when there were 406 unemployed in Tinajo, the decrease has been 19.5%.

Haría, for its part, has experienced a decrease of 6.8% in March in its unemployment figures to stand at 300 unemployed. That is 22 less than a month ago and 48 less than a year ago (-13.8%).

In Teguise the decrease has been 5.5%, which is equivalent to 60 fewer people unemployed. Currently there are 1,030 unemployed people in Teguise. Compared to a year ago, when there were 1,140 unemployed, the decrease in this municipality is 9.6% and 110 fewer unemployed.

Tías has improved its unemployment figures by 4.5%, from 975 unemployed in February to 931 at the end of March. That is 44 fewer people unemployed and 187 less than a year ago, when there were 1,118 unemployed (-16.7%).

Arrecife has experienced the smallest percentage decrease on the island, with a decrease of 4.4%, although in absolute numbers there are 212 fewer unemployed, that is, more than 40% of the total on the island. Compared to a year ago, the decrease in the capital is 18.2%, then there were 5,697 unemployed in Arrecife, today there are 4,659.
