After a sharp increase in unemployment last January in Lanzarote when it reached 4.4%, a fact partially attributed to the end of the Christmas campaign, unemployment remained stable in February with a growth of 0.1%, which means 12 more people are unemployed compared to the previous month.
The data, published this Thursday by the Canarian Employment Observatory (OBECAN), also shows that the current level of unemployment, which amounts to 9,339 people, is 15.7% lower than exactly one year ago. In February of last year, the number of unemployed reached 11,077 citizens.
The unemployed on the island are mostly women and over 45 years of age, although the growth in February has mainly affected those under 25 years of age.
Unemployment only increases in Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Teguise
The unemployment figures in February show great differences by municipality. Unemployment has increased by 1.5% in Arrecife, which is equivalent to 74 more people on the unemployment lists in the municipality. It has also grown in San Bartolomé, by 2.1%, adding 21 more unemployed. In Teguise, unemployment grew by 1.7%, which means there are 18 more unemployed.
On the other hand, unemployment has decreased in the rest of the municipalities. The largest percentage decrease has been observed in Haría, with a drop of 9% and 32 fewer unemployed. Next, Tinajo with a decrease of 7.4% and 28 fewer unemployed. In Tías the decrease has been 2.8% and 28 fewer unemployed. Finally, in Yaiza a decrease of 1.9% was recorded, which is equivalent to 13 fewer people in unemployment.
