Tourism, industry, education and healthcare are the sectors with the best prospects for job creation this year in the Canary Islands, according to data from the temporary employment agency Randstad.

In the case of the Spanish labor market as a whole, the activities that will generate the most employment this year will be industry, tourism, agri-food and logistics, according to the same data obtained from a survey conducted by the talent consultancy among the more than 250 offices spread throughout Spain.

Industry in different specialties, tourism and hospitality, logistics and transport and the agri-food sector are the economic activities that are currently creating the most employment and that have the best prospects for the whole year in Spain, according to data collected by Randstad.

The Spanish economy grew by 2.5% last year, according to data from the INE, with household consumption as the main driver. This derives from the labor dynamism shown by sectors such as tourism and hospitality or logistics, which is benefiting from the boom in e-commerce.

Boom in tourism and industry

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), hospitality has become one of the main sectors generating jobs in recent quarters. At the close of last year, the activity totaled 1.68 million workers throughout Spain, 80,600 more than a year earlier.

To the traditional autonomous communities where tourism is one of the main generators of employment, such as the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands or Andalusia, have been added others in which this activity has become strong in recent years, such as Madrid, Castilla y León or La Rioja with wine tourism. The profiles demanded by tourism and hospitality are mainly waiters, cooks, room attendants and leisure facilitators.

Also industry has been one of the sectors that has created jobs in the last year. According to INE data from the end of 2023, the activity employed 2.55 million workers, 9,000 more than a year earlier. Catalonia, Madrid and other communities in northern Spain, such as the Basque Country, Navarre, Asturias or Cantabria, where industry has traditionally played an important role, are the areas where this activity is having a greater impact on employment.

Within the industry, automotive stands out as an important branch in the generation of employment, thanks to the latest investments for the renovation of plants in the transition to the electric car. The railway and naval industries also stand out in the communities of northern Spain. In addition to engineers, these industries need production operators and specialized workers, such as folders, welders or punchers, among others.

Strength of the agri-food sector and logistics

The agri-food sector, for its part, has good prospects in numerous autonomous communities, although it shows important dynamism in the Valencian Community, Murcia, Andalusia and Extremadura.

In addition to operators who develop their activity in production plants, the sector also needs professionals with digital and engineering skills that facilitate the automation of industrial processes, as well as employees specialized in sales and marketing.

Finally, logistics maintains its strength due to changes in consumption habits and the rise of e-commerce. The main demands of logistics companies are packers, forklift operators, warehouse workers and transporters, as well as professionals dedicated to customer service. The autonomous communities where logistics maintains its strength are Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Murcia and Cantabria.
