The environmental conservation organization, WWF, has demanded that "the instruments for planning and management of the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park" be drafted and approved urgently, as well as the "creation of a specific management body" for this area.

The request has been made through a letter addressed to the Island Council of Lanzarote, so that it "urges the Government of the Canary Islands to expedite the approval process of the Natural Resources Management Plan" of the Natural Park.

It also requests that "the process of updating the Governing Plan for Use and Management" be urgently launched and that a Participatory Management Body" be created for the Park.

Sectoral working groups

"After an initial request, last February, to launch all these instruments, we observe with concern how since then no progress has been made and the preparation and approval of its conservation regulations and the creation of the participatory Management Body continue to be delayed," WWF points out.

The non-governmental organization has also requested that the development of these instruments "include all affected stakeholders through sectoral working groups with landowners, businessmen, fishermen, administrations and non-governmental organizations, among others."

WWF emphasizes that "while these instruments are not approved, pressure on the territory intensifies with certain economic activities and tourism. Every summer, visitor records are broken in the protected natural area while its conservation regulations are still pending approval."
