Lanzarote closed August with 2,358 fewer unemployed

The island ended the month with 14,421 unemployed, 14.1% less than in July

Lanzarote closed August with 2,358 fewer unemployed than the previous month. Specifically, according to data from the Canary Islands Employment Observatory collected by the Cabildo Data Center, at the end of the month there were 14,421 unemployed on the island, which represents a decrease of 14.1% compared to July. 

In comparison with August 2020, unemployment has decreased by 14.9% on the island, since there were 16,937 unemployed at that time.

In percentage terms, this is the largest drop in unemployment recorded on the island since the start of the pandemic. And, although in July unemployment decreased by 2,503 people, the percentage decrease was 13% compared to the previous month and 1.8% year-on-year. 

However, there are still 3,214 more unemployed than there were before the pandemic, given that in February 2020 there were 11,207 unemployed in Lanzarote.

Regarding hiring, 4,556 contracts were signed in August on the island, 19.5% more than the previous month and 109.2% more than in August 2020. 

In the Canary Islands as a whole, unemployment fell by 19,844 people in August compared to the previous month, which places the archipelago as one of the autonomous communities with the largest drop in unemployment in the last month. Specifically, the archipelago closed August with a total of 234,257 unemployed, a figure that represents a decrease of 7.81 percent compared to the month of July and 8.99 percent year-on-year.
