Lanzarote's accommodation establishments registered in May their best turnover so far this year and Teguise was the municipality with the highest income. However, the total turnover of the island's hotels was only 5.5 million euros compared to the 46.5 million they earned in May 2019.
According to figures from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac) Tourist Accommodation Survey published in the Cabildo Data Center, last month there were 104 tourist accommodations open in Lanzarote, 15 more than in April. In this case, Tías was the municipality with the most hotels and non-hotel establishments in operation with a total of 56, followed by Yaiza with 23, Teguise with 17 and Arrecife with 5, to which were added another three in the rest of the island.
In total, the 104 accommodation establishments that were open received a total of 35,798 travelers in May. A figure that is also the highest of the first five months of 2021 and represents 12,977 more people than the previous month. By municipalities, Tías was also the one that accommodated the most tourists, with a total of 12,507, followed by Yaiza with 9,384. However, Teguise, which received 8,636 travelers, invoiced more than the other two municipalities.
Specifically, the hotels and non-hotel establishments in Teguise earned 1.8 million euros, while those in Tías and Yaiza invoiced less than 1.6 million. This is due to the fact that Teguise had a higher occupancy rate per room and apartments and that its prices were also higher. And, the average room rate in tourist accommodations in Teguise, which had an occupancy rate per room/apartment of 27.22%, was 81.18 euros compared to 61.59 euros for those in Tías and 79.54 for those in Yaiza, which had an occupancy of 16.31 and 15.87 percent respectively.
As for the establishments in Arrecife, they invoiced 226,760 euros with an occupancy rate per room/apartment of 45.26%, while those in the rest of the island earned 291,532 euros without detailing their occupancy in the statistics published in the Data Center.
In Lanzarote as a whole, despite the fact that more travelers were received, the room/apartment occupancy in May was 19.50%, a figure similar to that of the previous month (19.33%). Likewise, the average stay was reduced, going from 5.10 to 4.51 nights. However, the average rate increased, going from 66.33 euros in April (71.92 euros in hotels and 51.38 euros in non-hotel accommodations) to 71.78 euros in May (81.70 euros in hotels and 46.24 euros in non-hotel establishments). This meant that the island's accommodation establishments invoiced nearly 2.2 million more than the previous month.
Finally, employment in the island's tourist establishments increased by 38.2% in May. And, compared to the 12,470 jobs that existed in April, a month later there were 3,418, which represents 948 more jobs.
