The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Department of Fisheries, recently held a key meeting with the General Director of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esteban Reyes, and representatives of the fishermen's associations of La Graciosa, San Ginés and La Tiñosa.
The objective of the meeting was to agree on a joint proposal between the General Directorate of Fisheries and professional fishermen in relation to the management of the census of vessels authorized to operate in the Reserve of the Maritime Biosphere of Fishing Interest of La Graciosa and the islets north of Lanzarote. A proposal that will be sent to the Ministry.
The Councilor for Fisheries of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Samuel Martín, expressed his gratitude to the regional head of Fisheries for his visit to the island and his willingness to meet with the fishermen's associations of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, highlighting the importance of this dialogue for the island's fishing sector.
During the meeting, they worked on the definition of common criteria for applying for licenses for professional vessels that carry out their activity in the Chinijo Archipelago.
In this sense, Esteban Reyes stressed the achievement of having managed to have all the fishermen's associations represented at the same table together with the Cabildo, allowing a consensus to be reached for the issuance of an order that will be sent to the General Secretariat of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in order to better legislate everything concerning activities within the Marine Reserve.
For his part, Samuel Martín positively valued the attitude and commitment shown by the General Directorate of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands in these meetings, highlighting the importance of continuing to work together to guarantee the sustainability of the fishing sector on the island.
"From the Cabildo of Lanzarote we will continue to collaborate with the Government of the Canary Islands and the fishermen's associations to achieve a balanced and sustainable management of marine resources in the Biosphere Reserve," concluded Samuel Martín.
