The Cabildo welcomes Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez, recent world sailing champions

This is the first Snipe world title obtained by Spain in the last 47 years

The Lanzarote sailors, Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez (Real Club Náutico de Arrecife-RCNA), were proclaimed last August in Cascais (Portugal, world sailing champions in the "Snipe" class. Therefore, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and the Minister of Sports, Alfredo Mendoza, received the athletes at the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

"They did something historic," Dolores Corujo highlighted when referring to the careful plan that Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez designed to be able to compete with the elite and be the best in Portuguese waters. She was also interested in the needs and projects they are managing in the coming weeks to "find the best way to continue supporting them."

One of the topics discussed at the meeting was the need to continue increasing the promotion of sailing among the population of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, in addition to supporting the work carried out by the Insular Center for Nautical Sports.

For his part, Alfredo Mendoza, beyond the congratulations, wanted to highlight the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife for the sports promotion "that it continues to execute successfully." In addition, he also focused on the facilities of the Insular Center for Nautical Sports, pointing out that "it is a space that, in addition to being the cradle for great sailors, manages to introduce hundreds of young islanders to nautical sports who follow a maritime tradition that contains great cultural values," Mendoza said.

The councilor announced that the world championship trophy will soon be on public display at the Cabildo facilities. The award obtained in Cascais is usually given by the International Sailing Federation to the winners for two years.

On the other hand, the sailor Alfredo González acknowledged that the meeting had been "very positive." He also emphasized how positive it is to continue bringing world crews to Lanzarote who use the island's training ground during the year. Finally, he noted that the world title achieved "is a team effort," referring to the coach Carlos Llamas and the psychologist Marta Morales, being a fundamental part of the winning tandem.

The world champions have been invited to give international conferences, highlighting countries in Latin America in countries such as Brazil and Chile.
