On Sunday afternoon, UD San Fernando ended UD Lanzarote's excellent run of results, with the Rojillos suffering their first defeat since the restart of the competition in the Third Division. The Lanzarote team deserved at least a draw, although this time luck was not on their side. The team from Gran Canaria scored the only goal of the match when Stephane converted a penalty in the first minutes of the second half.
UD Lanzarote and UD San Fernando played a first half with few chances, two teams that did not want to give any advantages in the defensive line and that worked in the wide area of the pitch to take control. The locals overused long balls, with Rosmen and Giovanni failing to beat the visiting defenders.
One of UD Lanzarote's few chances came with an attempted bicycle kick from Giovanni from Tenerife, which went over the crossbar. The locals arrived with some ease in the vicinity of the area, although they were not able to finish it off with shots between the three posts.
UD San Fernando also generated danger from set pieces. In the 17th minute, Stephane was in charge of taking a corner kick to the right of the goal defended by Alejandro, Pedro finished off at the far post and the Lanzarote goalkeeper took the ball out from under the goal for a corner kick.
There was a lot of respect between the two teams on the pitch. The visitors had to make a substitution before the break, with Javi Navarro leaving the pitch and Echedey coming on for him. The first 45 minutes of the match ended in a goalless draw.
The match livened up in the first minutes of the second half. As soon as it started, Rosmen finished off a loose ball in front of goal and the shot went over the crossbar. In the next play came the play that unbalanced the match, when Alejo fell inside the area in the presence of Oriol, with the referee pointing to the penalty spot. Stephane was in charge of taking the penalty and beating Alejandro.
As a result of the goal, UD Lanzarote took total and absolute control of the match, locking San Fernando in their half of the pitch. The Rojillos tried to open up the pitch through the wings, due to the accumulation of players from the opposing team inside the area.
David Armas was becoming San Fernando's lifeline, putting in a good performance between the posts. In the 70th minute, Ayoze took a free kick from the left wing, Giovani headed the ball and the goalkeeper saved it on the goal line. The rebound fell to Abdoulaye Ba, and the Senegalese's header was too soft into the hands of the goalkeeper.
Ayoze Pérez had the clearest chance in the 82nd minute, taking a free kick from the edge of the area and the ball hit the post after getting over the wall. And just a minute later, Miguel Gómez tried from the edge of the area, with a volley that went slightly over the crossbar.
UD Lanzarote threw themselves into the four minutes of added time and the match ended in controversy. Adrián Machín was brought down inside the area when he was trying to control a ball and on this occasion the referee did not consider that the action deserved to be punished as a penalty.
The match ended with a 0-1 scoreline, with San Fernando cutting short the Rojillos' good run of results in the last five matches. Next Wednesday UD Lanzarote visit Arucas, recovering one of the matches that had to be postponed during the time the competition was stopped.
