The Fuerteventura Sports Club Fuertekayak and the Lanzarote Sports Club Kayalanza made their official competition debut with a tight performance in the I International Kayak Fishing Open held during the days of July 18 and 19 on the beach of Suances, Cantabria. There, 51 participants from different Clubs of Spain met, such as C.D. Rincón de Gójar from Granada, C.D. Bahía Guadarmar from Murcia, Kayak Fishing Valencia, Astur Pesca Kayak from Asturias, the Jackson team and the hosts of the Cantabria Kayak Fishing Club. Members of foreign clubs from Portugal and the Czech Republic also participated.
The sea conditions accompanied during the two days of the championship and allowed the practice of the different fishing modalities from this type of boat.
The Canary team had to considerably adapt the techniques and materials normally used in their training and meetings in the Islands as they encountered many differences in terms of waters, types of bottom, species and their habits. All this, added to the lack of familiarity with the scoring system, meant that no one on the team could start their account during the first stage.
On Sunday the second round was held and everything had to be given. With the team especially motivated, it was when our fisherman Alvaro Arocha, capturing two good pieces; a sierra of almost 2 kg. and a beautiful sea bass managed to achieve the comeback and place sixteenth in the general classification and fourth in the ranking for the largest piece. These two awards went to Antonio de Vicente from Club Bahía Guadarmar with 144 pieces and 10,480 kg. and Manuel Sánchez from Kayak Fishing Valencia with a pinto of 1,990 kg. respectively.
The test was directed by José Manuel from the Cantabria Sports Club and was covered by numerous media such as Canal Caza y Pesca del Plus and Canal Narura TV among others.
The members of the expedition returned home with "a good taste in their mouths, with the feeling of having learned a lot from the experience and their sights set on the next Spanish championship". "Also very grateful to the Organizing Club, the sponsors and the institutions that have made it possible to place Canarian kayak fishing on the national competition map and promote our land as a sports paradise of this modality at the same time", they point out from the team.
