Player Julián Morales became the champion of the Hotel Lancelot Absolute Chess Tournament last weekend, held in recent weeks.

The novelties came in the second and third place, which were occupied by Pedro Tomás Pérez, who had a pretty good tournament from beginning to end, and especially José María Salazar, who at only 16 years old has been the third best player in Lanzarote.

Another surprise was the game of Miguel Ángel Placeres, who will enter the new Elo list with 1905 after making things difficult for Morales in his last game.

According to the island delegate of Chess of Lanzarote, Antonio Vera Martín, this meeting has been one of the best that have been held in the last five years, "both for the number of players and for their quality, many of them possessing international ELO scores".

Vera highlighted the fact that the first and second generations of chess players faced each other in this tournament, "with the young people achieving a level that has provided a great spectacle for the fans".

Last Sunday the awards ceremony was held at the Hotel Lancelot, a moment that was used to organize a rapid tournament of five-minute games. The Councilor for Festivities of the Arrecife City Council, Víctor Sanginés, one of the many participants in the competition, was present.

Vera has expressed his satisfaction with the new impulse that the sport of the board has acquired on our island, "a practice that we will continue to promote until we reach the levels we once had in Lanzarote".
