The hunting season in Lanzarote has not started "well." Since August 11, the hunting season has been open to capture rabbits, but this year the lack of rain, in localized areas such as the south of the Island, has not been beneficial for their reproduction and few specimens are being hunted, according to the president of the Lanzarote Hunting Society, Domingo Perera. At least, they take advantage of the season to practice a unique hunting modality in the world, which only occurs in the Archipelago. Rabbit hunting with Canarian hounds and ferrets. A particularity that could be considered as "traditional native sport" if the initiative promoted by Domingo Perera prospers.
This was stated this Monday by the president of the Hunting Society, who has already started the first meetings with specialists, in order to draft a draft to present to the Commission. And it is that the initiative that they have taken before the Canary Islands Hunting Federation has given its first fruits, since for the moment it has been decided to create a Commission of five people, chaired by Domingo Perera, to address this issue. Last month, the president met with Antonio Cabrera, journalist and expert, and next month he plans to do so with Antonio Cardona, who has published a book on this breed of hound dogs and Tito Monzón, member of the Canarian Hound Club, to shape the initial project, which will be studied later by the Commission.
Fans from the rest of the neighboring islands travel to Lanzarote every season to carry out this practice. However, Domingo Perera, dismissed the possibility that it could be a tourist attraction for hunters from other areas of the peninsula, and clarified that it would be an "excessively high expense", which would not compensate for the trip.
Hunting in Lanzarote
The president of the Hunting Society again referred to the "privileged situation of hunting practice in Lanzarote", and stressed that this activity does not have to be at odds with respect for the environment, on an island like Lanzarote, a Biosphere Reserve.
In this regard, he assessed that hunters are increasingly responsible and respectful with the Environment. "The hunter must be a good ecologist," he asserted. "The court where we practice our sport must be taken care of. Let it not be noticed that we have passed through that court, we must collect cartridges."
