Belgian Bart Aernouts, with an excellent mark of 8 hours, 34 minutes and 13 seconds, and British Lucy Charles (9:35:40), dominating the race from the swimming segment, were proclaimed today Saturday, May 20, winners of the 'XXVI Ironman Lanzarote' organized jointly by Club La Santa and the Cabildo de Lanzarote and which has had nearly 1,600 registered.
Completing the podium in the men's category were the champions of the 2015 and 2016 editions, Italian Alessandro Degasperi (8:43:23) and American Jesse Thomas (8:49:02), respectively. In the women's, the second and third positions were for the British Corinne Abraham (9:44:29) and for the champion in 2014 Lucy Gossage (9:50:22).
The first Spaniards in both categories were Peru Alfaro, fourth overall with 8:52:31, and Saleta Castro, fifth classified with 10:11:45. Along with the aforementioned champions of past editions, also participated the Spanish Víctor del Corral, winner in 2012; the French Romain Guillaume, champion in 2014; the German Diana Riesler, winner in 2015; and the Danish Tine Holst, champion last year.
This edition of what is considered one of the toughest and most prestigious long-distance triathlons in the world, and which as usual had a massive following of public, presented as the main novelty the passage of the Marathon segment through the Charco de San Ginés in Arrecife, one of the most emblematic spaces of the island's capital.
The 'XXVI Ironman Lanzarote' was sponsored by the Government of the Canary Islands, through the public company Promotur; Turismo Lanzarote, through the brand 'European Sports Destination'; Ayuntamiento de Tías; as well as various private companies.
