The people of the Canary Islands have been clear with their pronouncement at the polls. The PSOE is the political organization with which they feel most identified. With the last electoral cycle completed, there is no other conclusion: first force in the elections of May 28 and first force also in the elections of July 23.
This is what makes us the party of the social majority of the Archipelago. The one that best represents it and the main defender of its interests. The one that has more deputies in the Parliament of the Canary Islands and deputies in all the islands, guarantors of the cohesion of our land. We are synonymous with municipalism, progress and Canarian identity and this has been endorsed in this double electoral appointment.
In the autonomous and local elections just two months ago, the people of the Canary Islands made the PSOE the most voted option and the only party capable of achieving mayoralties in all the islands. And with an unquestionable leadership, that of Ángel Víctor Torres, who not only improved his results from 2019 (21,000 more votes) but also achieved an unappealable victory at the polls against the other main candidates for the presidency of the PP and CC, whom he surpassed by more than 100,000 direct votes.
The trend continued in the recent general elections, in which the PSOE repeated as the first force in support in the Canary Islands, obtaining 33% of the votes (compared to 31.70% nationally), winning in four of the seven island constituencies and adding 66,400 more ballots than in the past general elections of 2019. The best result of the last 15 years.
There is no other option than to affirm (and recognize) that the Canarian voice in Madrid is socialist and that this position, moreover, will be reinforced in the new legislature, as the results obtained on July 23 have been a boost in this regard. With more than 339,000 votes counted, the PSOE Canarias will increase its representation in Congress from five to six deputies and will once again have a territorial group in the Upper House with seven senators.
These are all data that reflect the notable support that these acronyms and their way of understanding the management of the shared space have in the Canary Islands today. Without forgetting, of course, the recognition that these results also entail for the hard work carried out from the governments during these last hard and difficult years, in which, despite the adversities experienced, we socialists have never stopped prioritizing social commitment, equality and the defense of public services.
We begin this new legislature in the Canary Islands in opposition work, but we will continue to behave as the government party that we will never stop being. Striving every day to add and build for this land, with loyalty, with responsibility and always contributing the best of our convictions.
We hand over a more prosperous and egalitarian Canary Islands with better data than the one we received four years ago, and we will demand that the new government do the same when its term ends. We owe ourselves to the social majority of the Archipelago and we will ensure their interests. No setbacks or cuts; the Canary Islands must continue to grow and advance.
We Canarian socialists will be up to the task. Up to the task of being the first party in the Canary Islands.
