The same old debate but with different actors

November 13 2016 (13:19 WET)

On Friday afternoon, after the island debate, I ran into a lady who, to my surprise, was interested in the island debate, which is strange given the growing disinterest that the people of Lanzarote have in politics, a fact that many politicians, obviously, have been eagerly fueling.

How was the debate? Did we solve anything? she asked me with a mischievous smile. My answer was more of the same: There are new parties working and doing a good job, but some still have the same ways, which translates into "there is nothing new under the roof of the plenary hall."

Well, I lie, a government group angry with the opposition for not praising their achievements, and an opposition angry with them for debating the same issues that they never solve, debate after debate, and that's annual.

Look, we, C's, focus on ten points: Island Hospital, Transparency, Cueva de los Verdes, Tourism, PIOT and Plan de la Geria, Unemployment, the poor condition of tourist centers, the low percentage of budget execution, water and the 0.02 cents of the blessed gasoline. Does all this sound familiar, right?

The same resolutions: food market, integration of the island hospital, expansion of the airport runway, the independence of the port, a nursing home, road maintenance, land law, etcetera. All these proposals are included in all electoral programs as if it were a "cut and paste", elections after elections they appear on the same electoral posters.

Anyway, now I understand that mischievous smile, because they are the same problems with the same answers. Nothing changes if the same people don't change.
