The Cabildo of Lanzarote has already awarded the first phase of the works of the Arrecife Open Commercial Zone. This 'Intervention Project on the Arrecife Marina waterfront' will be carried out by the company Proyectos y Montajes Ingemont, S.A, for a total amount of 1,108,723 euros and 77,610.64 euros of Igic.

Like the intervention already carried out in Playa Honda's open commercial zone and the one recently awarded for around 700,000 euros for the historic center of Teguise with the 'Plaza en Plaza' project, this intervention for the Arrecife maritime front is part of the Sectorial Program for the promotion of Open Commercial Zones of the Canary Islands. On the island, this program is promoted by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the General Directorate of Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands.

"This first phase that will be carried out in Arrecife will change the urban physiognomy of this part of the city, promoting the center and coastline of the capital as an open, commercial and tourist space, according to the objectives and strategy proposed by the Arrecife City Council for the protection and enhancement of historical heritage, the requalification of public spaces in the capital, bringing tourism closer to the commercial area and regulating traffic and parking areas," said the acting president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés.

Execution in three phases

The global project will be executed in three phases and the area of action will begin on Ruperto González Negrín street and will continue along La Marina avenue, Coll avenue and Vargas avenue, until the beginning of the Marina Lanzarote marina.

The president of the Cabildo also highlighted "the importance of recovering the Arrecife maritime front and integrating it into the city, valuing the environmental, cultural and patrimonial resources of our maritime front." In addition, Pedro San Ginés pointed out that "this project of the City Council aims to integrate the public spaces of the urban fabric of Arrecife, promoting mobility and accessibility to the commercial area, also minimizing road traffic."

Likewise, the open commercial zone project for Arrecife "has the objective of creating a single platform system as an adequate base to avoid the existence of architectural barriers and promote the continuous pedestrian between the traditional shopping area and the new commercial development areas," they emphasize from the Cabildo. "The paving will also be improved, aerial lines will be eliminated, services will be buried and environmental conditions will be improved, favoring walking and staying."

The Cabildo adds in its statement that "to this project, whose works will begin shortly, will also be added the execution of the 'Lanzarote Cycle Route' (VICI) project in the section that aims to unite the capital of the island with Teguise along its maritime front." It refers, specifically, to the execution of the first section, called 'Maritime Promenade between Puerto Naos and Charco de San Ginés' and that joins these two areas of Arrecife, which is in the process of being contracted. This project also went out to public tender with a budget close to one million euros.
