Vanoostende and Corujo meet to address the situation of the livestock sector in Lanzarote

The president of the Cabildo has requested that European aid to livestock be increased, as well as that the particularities of the sector in the non-capital islands be taken into account.

The Minister of Livestock of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, held a meeting on Wednesday morning with the President of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, and the Island Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Andrés Stinga, to address the situation of the livestock sector in Lanzarote.

The regional head explained the roadmap that the autonomous department is working on to mitigate the increase in the costs of livestock production that is hindering the profitability of farms in the islands, a structural crisis situation derived from the invasion of Ukraine and that has also led to the increase in the price of raw materials.

In this line, Vanoostende emphasized the importance of "modifying different European operational programs to send extraordinary aid to the livestock sector through the POSEI, an aspect that we are working on with Europe so that in the coming months we can pay these extraordinary aid to the livestock sector to compensate for the impact of the increase in production costs and give continuity to its activity".

"17 million euros of extraordinary aid have been granted through the Covid temporary framework. In addition, we are working on several avenues, including the Ukraine aid framework, with the possibility of using funds from the Canary Islands or the State, and the aid contemplated in the POSEI, with the specific modification of 20% to improve these funds for farmers," adds the Minister of Livestock of the Government of the Canary Islands.

For her part, the island president asked the minister to increase European aid for livestock, as well as to take into account the specificities and particularities of livestock on the non-capital islands in order to "reverse a situation that is affecting livestock farms in Lanzarote".

Finally, Corujo thanked "the regional head's willingness to address the requests of the conejero countryside, as well as the coordinated work between administrations to provide solutions to the various problems facing the sector".
