The Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands has awarded the Rehabilitation of the House of Culture Agustín de la Hoz, in Arrecife. The amount is 870,000 euros, from the funds of the Infrastructure and Tourism Quality Plan of the Island. The execution period of the works will be eighteen months.

The Ministry signed in April 2004 an Agreement to develop this Infrastructure and Tourism Quality Plan in Lanzarote, which was intended to execute several projects on the Island. Projects such as the rehabilitation of the Islote de la Fermina, the hermitage of Tinajo, the environmental conditioning of Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise. The objectives focus on increasing the quality of tourism services, improving the urban and natural environment, expanding public spaces and services, increasing the complementary offer and creating new products.

One year closed

On November 16 of last year 2005, the fifteen workers of the House of Culture Agustín de la Hoz were evicted after the then first deputy mayor of the City of Arrecife, Nuria Cabrera, signed a decree ordering the closure of the building once the capital's mayor, María Isabel Déniz, communicated to the mayor the concern among the workers.

Although in principle a technical report did not reflect any danger of imminent ruin, the capital's Consistory did not want to take risks and decided to relocate the workers to other facilities, until the rehabilitation of the building was undertaken.

Already since September 8, 2004, the City of Arrecife requested the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Housing of the Canary Islands Government a subsidy to carry out the rehabilitation works of the House of Culture, whose project is in the Consistory itself.
